July 18, 2018

Islamic Arts history is an important and still underated branch of arts history, and a lot of misconceptions are still floating around, especially in the West, about what it is, what it intails and how we can talk about it. … More Why does Islamic Arts History matter?

Hard at work... Safavid Persia, first half of the Hard at work...

Safavid Persia, first half of the 17th c.

@metislamicart (1976.183). Not on view, last exhibited in 1989 (I have been thinking a lot about museum hoarding these days but I don't have anything remotely insightful to add to the ongoing conversation so I'll keep quiet)

Diffusion... I now embark on the last chapter of Diffusion...

I now embark on the last chapter of my book, which deals with the adaptation of floral motifs on other artistic media during the 17th and 18th centuries.

It is a massive topic and exhaustiviy is out of question, so I need to find a good approach to talk about how floral patterns were transformed and transfered to various artistic media without falling into the trap of "these 2 motifs look the same". Ironically, this is exactly what I'm doing in this post and in the most random order.

Happy Saturday! I'm spending the day finishing the Happy Saturday! I'm spending the day finishing the last section of chapter 4, writing on the production of Indian albums in the 18th century, because that's my jam.

I struggled all week with how to approach it and finally found a way that allows me to go a bit further without repeating what I already published. I also realised I made a mistake in one of my papers, not knowing what I know now, but that's how things go!

Anyway, I'm revisiting this glorious volume compiled in Delhi in the 1730s. I'm particularly amazed by the margins (no surprise there) and how fast the decorative practices evolved between the reigns of Shah Jahan (1628-58) and Muhammad Shah (1719-48)! Take a look at the small selection.
And if you're asking what's the big black mark on the top of some margins, it's the seal of nawab Asaf ud-Daula. The placement is far from ideal, let's just say.

The book covers of the album have also been preserved. They are simply extraordinary!
