Happy New Year 2019!

January 1, 2019

This is with some disbelief that I wish you all a very happy new year 2019. Disbelief that 2018 is already passed and that we are already turning the page. What a year it has been! … More Happy New Year 2019!

This is probably the most intriguing object I saw This is probably the most intriguing object I saw in the Kunstkammer of the Kunsthistorisches museum in Vienna.
Called a "Fire-blower", this bronze figurine was filled with water, then placed in the embers. Through small holes, it would blow steam from it's mouth and nose.

This one was maybe made in upper Italy in the first half of the 12th century, and no one knows exactly what is was used for. All the figures of this type are baked and either kneeling or crouching.

The hole in its chest is the result of later damages.

How striking is this!

A random and undocumented selection from Vienna Ku A random and undocumented selection from Vienna Kunsthistorisches museum, illustrating my undying love for Brugel the Elder, architectural cabinets with secret doors everywhere, automatas, and mind blowing luxury.
I spent the entire visit or the Kunstkammer with my jaw on the floor, my brain couldn't comprehend that much material wealth. The picture before last is a ring entirely carved in a sapphire; no setting, pure stone, just because.
Some automatas, that most likely took years to make and cost an obscene amount of money, time and material, were intended as private jokes between two princes (if you go, there is a video hidden behind a partition that shows some automatas working, it is simply amazing).
More pictures to come!

"A Garment for Every Page" On the 8-9 September 2 "A Garment for Every Page"

On the 8-9 September 2023, I will have the honour to participate in the international workshop "Images of Drapes / Draped Images" at the University of Vienna, where I will talk about the connections between Mughal textiles and Mughal paintings in the 17th century.

This is a vast topic that can be studied from many angles, so I will use the research of my (soon to maybe) upcoming book on flower paintings to highlight the parallels between the productions.

👆🏻 Link in bio for the full programme and all the info.

Unfortunately, I don't think this will be livestreamed, I wish it was... If all is well (and it's not published), I'll put this paper on my website afterward.
But if you're in Vienna, come say hi!

The best panel that ever was... It's how I descri The best panel that ever was...

It's how I described our fantastic panel to anyone I encountered yesterday to make sure people would come. People came, and it was the best panel (that ever was).

Figurative margins in the Persianate world are a fascinating topic on which lots remains to be written. This panel with Pr Ilse Sturkenboom, @uniquejaimee, @_tayfoon_ and @emilyshovelton was the first step of what we hope will be a larger project.

More to come! Thank you to all who came, and obviously thank you to my wonderful co-organisor @_tayfoon_!
Until next time Leiden!
